MSTC helps Ocean Spray meet need for skilled workers

OceanSpray picks MSTC for partnership

Organization:

Ocean Spray is a grower owned cooperative owned by more than 700 cranberry growers and 50 citrus growers. The coop is North America's leading producer of canned and bottled juices and juice drinks.

In Wisconsin Rapids the coop owns a 300,000 square-foot manufacturing, warehousing and fresh fruit processing operation employing 134 skilled workers.

The facility went through a $70 million expansion to double in size and triple the staff in 2008.

Need:

With the expansion, Ocean Spray encountered difficulty finding employees with the necessary skills to operate the technology used in production.

Solution:

Ocean Spray partnered with Mid-State Technical College to develop customized training for all supervisors and program leaders. Management interviewed the instructors and influenced the curricula for the training.

Results:

All supervisors and managers went through the training. They agree that the experience made the plant a better place to work. Ocean Spray can now meet the need for skilled workers in its facility to keep up with production demands.
