Mike Shannon discovered a passion he didn’t know he had while studying at Moraine Park Technical College (MPTC).
“I knew I needed some education beyond high school,” Mike recalls. He chose MPTC because it was affordable, local and the marketing program had a good reputation.
“I am impatient. I liked that I could get right into classes like marketing and business law,” he adds. “I don’t know if I would have been able to make it as a liberal arts student. I was too anxious to get my career started.”
Once Mike got into his first marketing course he really liked it, in fact he was passionate about it. He also joined DECA, a student organization for marketing. After graduation Mike was ready to accept a position selling insurance. However, when his dad told him there was an opening at what was then called Holiday Oldsmobile, Mike chose his other passion--automobiles.
“I went into my first job with confidence. I owe MPTC for that,” he says. Eventually, Mike was one of three partners who bought the company. Now, he is the sole owner and president of Holiday Automotive, a dealership that houses Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Ford and Mazda franchises. Mike was named Wisconsin’s 2015 TIME Quality Dealer of the Year.
“The key to success is passion for something. You also have to be confident and have a positive attitude,” he says.
